Cookies

PC Gaming HQ requires the use of some cookies.  Cookies are small packets of data stored on your computer.  They usually contain a small ID, a selection of characters, which is linked to a database record on a website.

PC Gaming HQ uses cookies to function properly and without them many features will be disabled.  PC Gaming HQ does not use cookies to track the movement of users.  They are simply for allowing the user to login and remembering their details.

The cookies that PC Gaming HQ uses contain a random, encrypted ID that links to your user account on our database.  This is a secure way of accessing your login information so that you can access your account.
We will provide support to turn off cookies, at the expense of some functionality loss, in the near future.

Data Logging and Tracking

We log every user that uses PC Gaming HQ.  Every page they use, the time they visited, the IP address used and the browser used are all logged.  This is not used for tracking users; the amount of data is far too great to allow for individual reports in users activities.  We use this data to improve our website and to see certain pages performance.

In the event that a hack is attempted on the server, this data may be used in prosecuting them and preventing future hacks.

Security

All data stored by PC Gaming HQ is protected from being taken without authorisation.  We protect some of the data with encryption (the data that we feel shouldn’t be seen by anyone else, such as your password) but encrypting all the data would cause the server to run slower and may not affect hacking attempts on the server.  In some cases, encrypting data is not required because it is already publically visible, e.g. your username, profile data, etc…

A hack is a piece of computer code that performs a function, usually an unofficial alternative or addition to a commercial program.  In this case, a hack is a piece of code that allows access into the data stored in our database.  No computer is completely resistance to hacks (i.e. able to stop hacking attempts or prevent them from stealing data) due to the nature of computers.  We can, however, make it more difficult for hackers to retrieve the data stored by us.

We cannot make any guarantees that the data stored on our databases is completely secure from being stolen by third party groups or individuals.

Due to the fact that we do not use any credit card details or deeply personal information, we feel that it is unnecessary to use public-key cryptography (SSL - Secure Sockets Layer) to encrypt the connection between PC Gaming HQ and your computer. Public-key cryptography protects the data sent by encrypting it with a public key and decrypting it with a private key. It is a form of encryption that is used by banks. It should be noted that public-key cryptography does not offer complete protection.
